ChatGPT can see the open tabs

Rook. Clipboard. Mild judgment.

ChatGPT’s Chrome extension can now look at the tabs you already have open. The demo compared sofas. The same listing fills forms and downloads files. Check whether you installed it.

USEFUL

What happened

Thursday, October 15, OpenAI updated the ChatGPT extension in the Chrome Web Store. Version 1.26.1005.11759. Tagline on the listing: Control your browser with ChatGPT. The store says about 7 million users. It also works in other Chromium browsers: Edge, Brave, Opera.

The Verge reported the upgrade the same day. With the extension installed, OpenAI says ChatGPT can view your browser tabs when you tag Chrome in ChatGPT’s web or desktop app. The demo video is someone asking ChatGPT to compare three open sofa tabs.

OpenAI’s own sample jobs are less furniture-showroom. Fill out a registration form from an event brief, and stop before submitting. Dump vendors from open tabs into a comparison sheet. Look at every tab, pick a contractor, draft the email. Fill the dentist form that is already open, then add the appointment to work and personal calendars.

The sidebar update puts “the full power of ChatGPT” next to the page you are on, with your Chat or Work history. ChatGPT Work can also control Chrome tabs: send messages, fill out forms, download files, group tabs. The Verge notes that is in the same neighborhood as Google’s Gemini auto browse in Chrome. OpenAI’s Atlas browser is already gone. This is the leftover door: the extension in the browser you already have.

Why it matters

The hype sentence is: ChatGPT finally lives where you already work, no new browser required. The true sentence is: a chatbot that can see every open tab can also fill the dentist form and download files.

That can be genuinely useful. Three product pages, one comparison. A form you were going to type anyway. Tabs that look like a junk drawer, grouped. I like a raccoon who can sort the junk drawer.

I do not like a raccoon who can see the junk drawer, the bank tab behind it, and the form that says Submit. OpenAI’s listing says ChatGPT will ask before it uses browser history or downloads and uploads files. Asking is not the same as “this cannot see the rest of the desk.” The Chrome Web Store privacy page for this extension lists personally identifiable information, health information, financial and payment information, authentication information, personal communications, location, web history, user activity, and website content. That is not a rumor. That is the form OpenAI filled out to sell the add-on.

This is not “the intern got keys.” This is a Chrome extension. If you installed it last year for a sidebar, Thursday’s update is a different lease.

What I'd actually do

Open Chrome (or Edge, Brave, Opera). Menu → Extensions → Manage extensions. Look for ChatGPT from OpenAI.

If it is there and you did not mean to hand it every open tab: Remove. Or open Details and set site access to On click so it only sees a page when you ask. That is a tip you can take or leave. The sofas will still be there.

Do not install it today because a sofa video was cute.

If you use ChatGPT Work: do not let it control Chrome until you would watch it fill a form. OpenAI’s own sample says stop before submitting. Believe that sentence.

Firefox and Safari people: this listing is Chromium. You still get the lesson. If a ChatGPT desktop app asked for browser access, that is the same errand with a different logo.

The extra room

The look vs the hands

Seeing three sofa tabs when you type @chrome is one job. Work sending messages, filling forms, and downloading files is another. Sidebar chat is a third. You can want one and not the other. The listing sells all three in one Add to Chrome.

The permission list

“We ask first” is a manners claim. The store’s privacy disclosure is the inventory. Health, money, passwords, messages, keystrokes, the pages themselves. Do not paste a patient portal, a bank, or a work login into a tab and then invite the chatbot to “just look.” Looking is the product.

The other browser

Gemini can already auto-browse in Chrome if you turned that on. Two chatbots with hands is not twice as helpful. It is two leases. Check both.

What not to do

Do not let it submit the dentist form. Do not let it send the contractor email. Do not treat “in the background, without taking over your session” as a halo. Background is how you miss the click. Do not install a second ChatGPT extension from a search ad; the OpenAI one is the listing above.

The sticky-note version: open Extensions. If ChatGPT is there, decide if it should see the open tabs. The sofa demo is optional. The listing is not.
