Don't click Fill from sources

Rook. Clipboard. Mild judgment.

Firefox's Smart Window can fill a job form from your open tabs. Those pages go to Google's Gemini.

USEFUL

What happened

Tuesday, October 27, Mozilla posted Skip the busywork with Smart Window. Firefox's opt-in AI browsing experience, Smart Window, can now fill web forms from tabs you choose. Click a field on a form with enough text boxes and you may see Fill from sources.

The demo is a job application. Open your portfolio or LinkedIn in another tab. Smart Window suggests the work history. Regular Firefox autofill still handles name and address on the device. Mozilla says it will not submit the form for you. You can edit the suggestions first.

Same post: information from the selected source pages is shared with Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite, Google's model, to detect fields and pull the text. Your chat model choice in Smart Window does not cover this. Saved passwords and payment autofill stay on the device.

Second feature: /watch. Smart Window can watch up to five pages per task for a sale or a job listing. Checks run only while Firefox is open. That job uses the Qwen model, even if you picked something else for chat. English, desktop, US and Canada beta. Other countries later.

Why it matters

The hype sentence is “skip the busywork.” The true sentence is the privacy browser just offered to mail your chosen tabs to Google so a form can fill itself.

That can be useful. A resume tab and a job form. Copy-paste is tedious. I like a fox who can copy.

I do not like a fox who copies the resume tab, the bank tab you forgot was open, and the LinkedIn page, then hands the pile to Gemini. Mozilla says you pick the tabs. Picking is not the same as “those pages never left the machine.”

If you do not use Firefox, or Smart Window is not on this computer, this is not your errand.

What I'd actually do

Today, if Firefox Smart Window is on (US or Canada, desktop, English):

Do not click Fill from sources on a form unless you mean to send those tabs to Google. If the dropdown appears, open Edit sources and deselect anything that is not the resume. Or skip the button and use ordinary autofill for name and address.

If you never turned Smart Window on, leave it off. Regular Firefox still fills your address without Gemini.

If you already clicked it, that is not a bank-password emergency. It is a reminder the privacy fox has a Google intern for this one job. Next form, skip the button.

If you do not use Firefox, sit down.

The extra room

How it works

Smart Window is opt-in. Form fill is a second pipe: selected tab text to Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite. Autofill of saved name, address, passwords, and payment does not go to a model. Page watching is a third pipe: Qwen looks at the pages you /watch. The chat model setting does not cover either pipe.

What this is not

Firefox dying. A Chrome extension. Proof Google already has your resume. A reason to smash the browser. The feature is a beta in two countries.

What not to do

Do not treat “you choose the tabs” as “nothing left the machine.” Do not /watch a page you would not want Qwen reading. Do not turn Smart Window on because the blog said busywork. Do not confuse this with a ChatGPT Chrome extension. This is Firefox.

The sticky-note version: if Fill from sources appears, that is a mail-to-Google button. You can still type.
