Zest wants the group thread. The card is optional. The intern in the chat is not.
What happened
Thursday, October 30, Zest launched a restaurant concierge that lives in your texts. The number is (212) 470-6067. No app required. Free. TechCrunch wrote it up. The product page is textzest.com.
You text a vibe, a neighborhood, who hates what. It answers from where you and your friends actually eat, not stranger reviews. It can check OpenTable, Resy, and SevenRooms and book the table. You can drop it into a group chat, blend tastes, vote in the thread, and book without leaving.
The map app already existed. Credit cards come in through Plaid, food-and-drink charges only, and Zest says that part is optional. Their FAQ: it sees where you ate and when. Read-only. How much you spent never shows. Without a card the agent still works, with less to go on. Tired of it: text STOP.
CEO Mario Gomez-Hall told TechCrunch the agent is the product now. Booking and ordering are the first revenue lines. Food ordering is coming. He said that taste file is worth something well beyond dinner.
Why it matters
The hype sentence is dinner without the group-chat paralysis. The true sentence is an intern in the thread that already knows where you eat, and can book.
That can be genuinely useful. Group chats are where dinner dies. A vote and a reservation is a real errand.
The ugly is the costume. Everyone in the thread sees the intern. It blends "everyone's tastes" from visits, including the friend who did not invite the bot. Booking is a transaction Zest wants to sit on. Optional card is still a card.
What I'd actually do
Today: do not add (212) 470-6067 to a family or work group thread because the recs are cute.
If you already texted it for yourself: fine. Keep it in a one-to-one thread. Text STOP if you want it gone. Do not link a card unless you want restaurant visits feeding the intern. You can add places by hand.
If a friend drops Zest in the chat: treat it like a person who was not invited. Kick it, or leave.
You do not have to boycott restaurant recs. You also do not have to let the intern vote.
How it works
You text the number. Context carries if you already use the Zest app. Card via Plaid is extra memory, not the on switch. Group chat is the move they are selling: blend the table, vote, book.
What this is not
ChatGPT. Gemini calling a restaurant with your caller ID. Proof OpenTable is obsolete. A reason to smash every recs app. Zest says the agent will not blow up your phone — about once a week at most unless you text first.
What not to do
Do not add it to the family thread "just to settle sushi." Do not link a card because the FAQ said spend never shows. Do not assume the quiet friend in the chat agreed to share where they eat. Do not confuse "no app necessary" with "no one is keeping the map."
The sticky-note version: text it alone if you want. Do not drop it in the group.
