Don't give Muse the inbox

Rook. Clipboard. Mild judgment.

Muse wants Gmail so the dashboard stays current. A trivia game does not need the mail.

USEFUL

What happened

Friday, November 6, Meta shipped Spaces in Muse. You describe an idea — a gift tracker, a word game, a planning board — and Muse builds a custom page inside the app. Meta says Spaces are available everywhere Muse is. The Verge and TechCrunch covered it.

Connect the apps you already use, and the space keeps itself up to date in the background. The Verge names Gmail, Google Calendar, OpenTable, and Notion. Meta’s own pitch includes a school dashboard that finds events in school emails and adds them to the calendar, a shopping hub with Instagram saves, and a wedding planner with vendor invoices. Mark Zuckerberg posted that he made a BBQ game, an event tracker, and a home control dashboard.

Meta says it is also exploring ways to share spaces with other people.

Why it matters

The hype sentence is “tell Muse what you need and it builds it.” The true sentence is the school inbox sitting in a Meta agent so the dashboard does not go stale.

A trivia game is a toy. Connecting Gmail is the chore. Background update means you do not have to ask. It also means you do not have to be looking.

What I'd actually do

If you use Muse: when Spaces shows up, you can describe a word game. Do not connect Gmail, Google Calendar, or a school inbox to power it. Default is no.

If you already connected those apps to Muse for chats, do not add them to a Space that refreshes itself. That is a second intern with a key to the mailbox.

If you do not use Muse, this is not your door.

The extra room

How it works

Describe it. Muse builds it. Keep it in the sidebar, move it to a main tab, or schedule when it appears. Connect an app and it pulls dates, prices, and mail in the background. You can check things off and add notes in the space.

What this is not

Muse reading Gmail with no connect button. A reason to delete Muse. Voice mode. A cartoon avatar. Proof the BBQ game needs your calendar.

What not to do

Do not connect “just to see the school dashboard.” Do not treat a word game as proof the mail is fine. Do not share a space that has mail in it, even as a test. Meta is still only exploring sharing.

The sticky-note version: Muse can build the dashboard. It still should not have the inbox.
