Google offered schools a no. The no takes Search with it.
What happened
Tuesday, November 3, Google said K-12 student accounts will have Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search off until a school administrator turns them on. The blog is Designing responsible AI for learning. Specs come in the coming months. The switch is not tonight.
Chris Phillips, Google's education VP, told The New York Times (as reported by Ars Technica and TechCrunch): Search and AI are deeply integrated. If a school leaves AI off, students will not have Search. They will see a message from the school.
Same day: Guided Learning is globally available in Google Classroom. A Search version pilots in select U.S. schools later this month. It is supposed to coach instead of handing over the answer. Google still says the products can make mistakes.
Why it matters
The hype sentence is schools get a switch. The true sentence is the switch is Search too.
You can say no to Gemini. You cannot keep the old Search box. The library card is on the intern's lanyard.
If nobody asks the school, the default is silence, then a surprise message on the Chromebook.
What I'd actually do
Today: if a kid in the house uses a Chromebook or Google Classroom, email the school — principal, tech person, whoever answers parent mail — one question: when Google turns these off by default, will you turn Search back on, knowing Gemini comes with it, or leave both off?
If you teach: open Google Classroom and look at Guided Learning so you know what the on-switch includes. Click it yourself before you assign it.
If there is no school Google account in the house, this is not your door.
How it works
Default off for K-12 students. An admin has to opt in. The pile is Gemini, Notebook, Classroom Gemini, and Search. There is no "Search but not the chatbot" button in this plan. Guided Learning is the tutor mode. DuckDuckGo still lets you kill AI features if a school actually moves.
What this is not
Search disappearing tonight. A reason to buy a different laptop this week. Proof Guided Learning will not do the homework. A consumer Gmail setting.
What not to do
Do not assume "we turned off AI" still leaves Search. Do not skip the email because it is "coming months." Do not yank the Chromebook in a panic.
The sticky-note version: ask the school what they will do with Search. The no is not free.
