Don't wait out ChatGPT Classic

Rook. Clipboard. Mild judgment.

The old ChatGPT app got a date. The Work tab is next. The meter is the part that bites.

SHINY, NOT URGENT

What happened

Monday, November 2, people still on ChatGPT Classic opened the desktop app and got a banner: it retires January 30, 2027. Get the new ChatGPT app. Full chat history comes with you. 9to5Mac saw the banner. The download page is chatgpt.com/download.

Same day, OpenAI emailed users: it will merge the Chat and Work tabs into one ChatGPT screen. Select users first, then everyone. Codex stays a separate section in the desktop app.

The catch: ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same usage pool. OpenAI says most people will not wait for resets more often. Advanced models and messy jobs use more. Unlimited Instant on the plan does not draw from that pool. Settings → Usage is where remaining allowance and reset time live.

Greg Brockman already called the new desktop app "kind of a mess" in July and hoped to fold Work into regular ChatGPT by year end.

Why it matters

The hype sentence is one screen from idea to a website. The true sentence is the leftover desktop app is on a clock, and chatting plus coding will share one meter.

Classic was the old native app people kept because the new one was Electron and confusing. New models and extra knobs landed in the new app anyway. Classic got quieter, then it got a date.

You do not have to love Work. You do have to notice the meter.

What I'd actually do

Today: open the ChatGPT app on the computer. If the name still says Classic, go to chatgpt.com/download and get the new one. History comes with you. Do not wait until January.

Then: Settings → Usage. Look at the remaining allowance. If you use Codex a lot, the shared pool is the surprise.

If you only use chatgpt.com in a browser, this is not your door. Phone apps are not Classic.

The extra room

How it works

Classic is the leftover desktop app from before OpenAI stuffed Chat, Work, and Codex into one window. The new download is that window. Work can pull in files and plugins and try to build a site, a deck, or do things on the web while you watch. Instant chat is the unlimited lane.

What this is not

A security patch. A reason to cancel Plus tonight. Proof Work is ready. The merge is a test for some users, not a switch that flipped Monday.

What not to do

Do not stay on Classic because the new app felt messy in July. Do not assume Chat and Codex still have separate limits after the merge. Do not confuse this with deleting the website.

The sticky-note version: if it says Classic, download the new app. Then peek at Usage.
