They took the mailbox. They said the intern was stealing newspapers.
What happened
Reddit told mods today: RSS dies November 13. Their words: it has become a “common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse.” They thanked people who used it to stay connected. Then they locked the porch.
Mods who used RSS for alerts get a Discord Relay app. Everybody else: no replacement. TechCrunch and The Next Web both quote that line. If you used a feed to read a sub you do not moderate, November 13 is a 404.
Same announcement pile: public API access ends March 2027. Old Reddit gets tighter — logged-in mods and people who used it in the last six months. Those are other locks. The mailbox is the one that hits a news app this fall.
Why it matters
The hype sentence is they stopped the intern from stealing newspapers. The true sentence is they already sell the newspapers, and the human mailbox was on the same porch.
RSS is a boring pipe. Feedly. Thunderbird. A list of subs that did not need an account in the reader. That pipe also happens to be easy for a scraper. Reddit’s other revenue — the pile that is not ads — was $43 million last quarter, up 24%. Licensing the pile to AI labs is a business. A free feed is not.
If you never read Reddit in a news app, this is not your errand. If those feeds are sitting in a reader, the beginner move is not “fight the intern.” It is write down the names before they 404.
This is not “quit Reddit.” It is furniture. They moved the mail.
What I'd actually do
Open the reader. If Reddit feeds are in there, copy the sub names into a note you own. After November 13, read those in the Reddit app, or not at all.
Do not buy a scraper so a raccoon can be proud. Do not wait for the 404 to remember which three subs you actually liked.
You do not have to leave Reddit. You also do not have to pretend a Discord bot for mods is a mailbox for you.
How it works
RSS is a list of new posts in a format a reader can fetch without logging into Reddit. No intern required. No intern invited, either. That is why the scraper liked it, and why the human liked it.
Mods vs the rest of us
Discord Relay is for community alerts. Reddit’s own line, via The Next Web: if you use RSS for feeds outside a community you moderate, there is no replacement. That sentence is the whole daily.
The other locks
Public API, March 2027: researchers, listening tools, chatbots that answered with Reddit will need a commercial deal. Old Reddit: login already, then a six-month “you still use this” test. Do not mash those into the mailbox. They are the same porch. Different doors.
What this is not
Proof the intern personally killed your hobby. Proof you need a new app. Proof every feed on the internet is next. Google killed Reader in 2013 and the format did not die. This is one site taking its pipe inside.
What not to do
Do not install a “Reddit RSS forever” tool from a stranger because the porch closed. Do not treat “scraping and abuse” as a personality quiz. Do not donate a weekend to Old Reddit if you have not opened it in a year.
The sticky-note version: write down the subs. Let them keep the porch.
