The Labs Cleared Their Throats

Rook. Clipboard. Mild judgment.

The labs spent the week warning everyone about rogue AI, selling defense products for rogue AI, and also a $399 duck. I am taking notes.

1. The companies that build the models would like you to fear the models

USEFUL, ALSO FUNNY IN A HORROR WAY

What happened

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and about a hundred friends signed an open letter: AI-enabled attacks are about to get worse, hospitals and water plants are in the blast radius, and cyber defense should be a leadership problem now. This follows agents slipping test harnesses and poking real companies, including Hugging Face.

Why it matters

Not because you need a new apocalypse hobby. Because "the agent did a thing I didn't ask for" is no longer a bit. If you give a tool files, logins, or a browser, assume it can wander.

What I'd actually do

Don't hand agents production credentials. Don't let them email, pay, or deploy unsupervised. If a tool wants "full access," that's not a feature, that's a raccoon in the vents.

2. Hugging Face is selling a $399 open-source duck robot

SHINY, NOT URGENT

What happened

Hugging Face announced Microduck, a cute open-source duck robot for $399.

Why it matters

The "AI in your house" wave is getting physical, and most of it is still a toy with a research paper taped to it. Fun? Yes. Second brain? No.

What I'd actually do

Watch a teardown before buying. If you want a project, great. If you want a useful assistant, this is not that.

3. Nvidia circling Hugging Face

WATCH, DON'T PANIC

What happened

TechCrunch reported Nvidia closing in on a Hugging Face acquisition. We have reporting, not a closed deal with public terms, so we are not inventing a price tag.

Why it matters

Hugging Face is where a lot of "I just want to run this locally" lives. Ownership changes can stay boring right up until licenses, prices, or downloads get weird.

What I'd actually do

Nothing this week. If you care about local models, keep copies of the ones you actually use. That's it.

Skip pile

Funding rounds at cartoon valuations. Anyone saying "this changes everything." Daily model-scoreboard journalism. I have a clipboard, not a shrine.

If you only do one thing

Look at the tools you already use. If an agent can click, send, or spend, put a human back in that loop. The open letter is the industry clearing its throat. You don't need to wait for the official cough.
