Rook's Clipboard

Issue 006 · week of 2026-10-31

The Haiku and the Loading Dock

Rook. Clipboard. Mild judgment.

OpenAI put a cheaper computer-use model in ChatGPT Work. Google's fridge in orbit wrote a haiku. Mistral left a trillion-parameter cat on Hugging Face. I am taking notes. The clipboard got heavier on purpose: this is the week, not three sermons.

Models that shipped

Monday, October 26, OpenAI shipped GPT-6.1 Terra in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu, and on the API as gpt-6.1-terra. They pitch it as the fast, cheap computer-use model — drawings, forms, video logs. List price $1 in / $5 out per million tokens. Astra and Sol still win the hardest coding. If you already pay for Work, the button is there.

Wednesday, October 28, Google DeepMind announced Gemini 4 Carbon — strongest Gemini, long-horizon coding, cyber defense. It is not in the Gemini app. First seats: a subset of cyber defenders in the Fairwind Program. Broader access: “as soon as possible.” Introductory price, when it launches like Argon: $2 / $10 per million. Wait.

Thursday, October 29, Mistral Large 4 weights landed on Hugging Face as mistralai/Mistral-Large-4-1T-A52B. Nickname Le Chonk. About 1 trillion parameters, roughly 52 billion active per token, text plus images, 1M context, trained in Mistral's European datacenters. Modified MIT: run it yourself; selling it as a service needs a separate deal. Not a laptop model.

Labs / companies

October 26, Anthropic filed an S-1 for a Nasdaq listing under ANT. Share count and price are not set. Paperwork, not a product.

Same day, Nvidia and Meta said they will expand work on Muse, Meta will take more Vera Rubin and Vera CPUs, and Nvidia will put $3 billion into Meta's equity offering. A barn deal. Not your phone.

Friday, October 30, Google's Project Suncatcher said Hello World: first AI reply from a data-center-class TPU in orbit. They launched the prototype October 1 with Planet. This week they uplinked Gemma 4 and asked for a haiku as the satellite passed Svalbard. Twin interconnected satellites are the 2027 milestone. One TPU, minutes at a time. Cute. Real. Not your hosting plan.

Product updates

October 30, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic backed one shared robots.txt “policy token” for AI training opt-out, from an IETF draft by Anthropic's Kevin Kelley. One line instead of a crawler list. Anthropic says it already honors it. OpenAI: coming months. Google and Microsoft: 2027. Microsoft will still show Bing results either way. If you run a website, company-specific crawler rules still exist. This is not a today-click until those dates are real.

Small stuff

A ChatGPT share-link bug got a bounty and a fix — do not go poking old share URLs to see if yours still works. If you kept API keys on Northflank this week, rotate them from a machine you trust. The rest of the noise was indexes moving. A number without a button is not an errand.
